Radar Contact with Venus

چکیده

In April 1961 radar contact with Venus was established in the Soviet Union. A transmitter and receiver at about 700 Mc/s were used in conjunction with an analysing and integrating system which enabled both the range of the planet and the Doppler spread in the returned signals to be determined. From the range data a new value of the astronomical unit is found; from the Doppler spread it is deduced that the maximum rotation period of the planet is eleven days. Venus is found to re-radiate about 10% of the radio energy intercepted by the disc.

SAR interferometry at Venus for topography and change detection

Since the Magellan radar mapping of Venus in the early 1990’s, techniques of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) have become the standard approach to mapping topography and topographic change on Earth. Here we investigate a hypothetical radar mission to Venus that exploits these new methods. We focus on a single spacecraft repeat-pass InSAR mission and investigate the radar and miss...

Volcanic deposits in shield fields and highland regions on Venus: Surface properties from radar polarimetry

[1] We compare Arecibo dual-polarization radar image data for Venus to Magellan images and emissivity data to investigate the physical properties of volcanic deposits. Radar waves can easily penetrate smooth mantling layers such as ash, aeolian and craterderived deposits. If a circularly polarized radar wave refracts into a surface that is smooth at wavelength scales, the vertical component of ...

V Session: RADAR OBSERVATIONS OF THE PLANETS A Review of Radar Studies of Planetary Surfaces

In recent years, radar has been used to study the surfaces of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars , and Jupiter. In the case of Venus, attenuation in the planetary atmosphere at short wavelengths has also been reported. For Mercury and Venus , where the diurnal rotation is difficult to establish by other means, radar has provided a clear-cut determination of the sidereal periods as 59 and 247 days...

Cassini Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR): Earth and Venus observations

The Cassini Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) was operated in scatterometric and radiometric modes during the Venus 1 and Earth swingbys to verify its functionality. At Venus, only the thermal emission from the thick absorbing atmosphere was detected. At Earth both the radar echo and the microwave emission from the surface were detected and reveal ocean surface disturbances, the rough, high, ...

Impact crater related surficial deposits on Venus: Multipolarization radar observations with Arecibo

[1] The distribution of surficial deposits in the vicinity of impact craters on Venus was studied using measurements of the polarization properties of the reflected radar wave. Subsurface scattering of an incident circularly polarized radar signal results in a linearly polarized component in the radar echo due to the differing transmission coefficients at a smooth (at wavelength scales) atmosph...
